Recovery is possible from "smex" addiction. Patrick Carnes has found that at the end of year five of sobriety, relapse is as close to zero as possible. The risk of relapse is never zero, but if you have maintained sobriety for five years and have some guardrails in place, the odds of relapse are very low.
