Their next destination was Howland Island, a tiny strip of land in the Pacific Ocean less than two miles long. U.S. Coast Guard ship Itasca was stationed there to provide radio contact, but Earhart’s transmissions grew increasingly frantic as fuel ran low. At 8:43 a.m.,
