[25] Right whales feed mainly on copepods and other small invertebrates such as krill, pteropods, and larval barnacles, generally by slowly skimming through patches of concentrated prey at or below the ocean surface. With only 70 reproductive female North Atlantic right whales remaining, we keep a close watch on them and their new calves to help ensure their survival. Considering these current numbers, 20 new calf births would be considered a relatively productive calving season.
North Atlantic Right Whale Calving Season Archive
Every year, scientists closely monitor the birth of North Atlantic right whales during the annual calving season. Below is an archive of mother-calf pairs identified during the 2021–2024 calving seasons. The endangered North Atlantic right whale population has been in decline since 2010.
