The Trump administration has sued the state of Michigan, seeking to prevent it from suing major oil companies over the role they have played in causing climate change, saying the Democratic-led state was standing in the way of domestic energy production.

The lawsuits mark the administration’s latest attack on climate action in the name of “energy dominance” and has raised fears about states’ ability to pursue action against polluters.

The Trump administration sued Michigan, its Democratic governor and attorney general, trying to block the state from seeking damages in court from fossil fuel companies it says caused harm through climate change.
