Continued worries about the U.S. fiscal outlook triggered another selloff in long-dated U.S. government debt as of Wednesday morning, pushing the yield on the 30-year bond back above 5% for the second time this week in what turned out to be a problematic development for stocks.

U.S. stocks closed a choppy session little changed on Thursday, erasing initial declines as Treasury yields eased off recent highs after the House of Representatives passed U.S. President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill.

Treasury yields have been on the rise in part because of concerns that tax cuts currently under consideration in Washington could pile trillions of more dollars onto the U.S. government’s debt. Concerns are also still brewing about how much Trump’s tariffs will push up on inflation in the United States.
