Portugal’s ruling center-right Democratic Alliance (AD) won a snap parliamentary election on Sunday but again fell short of the majority needed to end a long period of instability as the far-right Chega gained a record share of the vote.

Portugal's ruling centre-right Democratic Alliance (AD) took an early lead in Sunday's parliamentary election, garnering over 38% of the vote with more than 10% of the ballots counted, official electoral data showed.

Portugal’s centre-Right Democratic Alliance (AD) party won the country’s third general election in three years on Sunday but failed to secure a majority as support for the far-Right Chega rose.

The extremist Chega party obtained as many MPs as the Socialist Party, but is expected to surpass it once the overseas votes are counted. The conservative Luis Montenegro is expected to remain prime minister.

The center-right AD-PSD/CDS coalition won Sunday’s legislative elections with 86 seats, while the Socialist Party and far-right Chega tied at 58 seats each after all national votes were counted.

Near complete official results yesterday showed Montenegro’s center-right Democratic Alliance (AD) had boosted its tally in the 230-seat parliament to 89 in Sunday’s poll, short of the 116 seats required for a ruling majority.

The first exit poll shared by Avangarde for TVR1 indicates a lead for liberal Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan with 54.9%. Nationalist leader of far-right party AUR George Simion is on 45.10%. Turnout was high - around 65%.
