R ecent spaghetti models indicate that Tropical Storm Erin, which meteorologists warn has the potential to strengthen into a hurricane by Friday, is unlikely to directly hit the U.S. coast. Forecasters say Erin could develop into the first major hurricane of the 2025 season.

Tropical Storm Erin, a brewing powerhouse in the Atlantic, is gaining strength and is forecast to become the season’s first hurricane by the weekend. It has the potential to be a major hurricane, prompting millions along the US East Coast and Caribbean to keep a close watch.

The first Atlantic hurricane of 2025, Erin reached Category 5 status before weakening somewhat and becoming a Category 4 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (220 kph)

The chances that rain and wind from Tropical Storm Erin will hit the East Coast have risen slightly this week.

As of the latest advisory on Aug. 11, Invest 97L has a high chance — 90% — chance of strengthening in the next seven days.

The National Hurricane Center is predicting Invest 97L could become a tropical depression or tropical storm as early as later this morning, Aug. 11.
