Keir Starmer sealed a “one in, one out” migrant returns trial with French President Emmanuel Macron that highlighted the limits for now of the UK Prime Minister’s efforts to reset relations with European nations five years after Brexit.

Keir Starmer yesterday hailed the “groundbreaking” migrant returns deal he has struck with French president Emmanuel Macron. The agreement will see France initially accept a small number of asylum seekers who have made their way to the UK in small boats across the English Channel.

He says small boats migrants will be returned to France, in exchange for asylum seekers who have not tried to enter the UK illegally.
