Brazil placed former president Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest Monday pending his trial for allegedly orchestrating a coup attempt following his election loss in 2022, The Associated Press reported Monday.

The trial of the far-right leader is receiving renewed attention after U.S. President Donald Trump directly tied a 50% tariff on imported Brazilian goods to his ally's judicial situation.

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been placed under house arrest by the Supreme Court. He’s on trial for allegedly masterminding a coup to remain in office after he was defeated at the ballot box in 2022. The far-right leader denies he tried to overthrow the country’s current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
