California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he would drop threats to redraw California’s congressional map if red states dropped efforts to alter the political landscape before next year’s midterm elections.

Newsom’s remarks come as Texas Democrats continue a high-profile standoff over proposed maps that could give Republicans five more congressional seats. Texas Democratic state Rep. Vince Perez is among those who left the state last week to deny Republicans the quorum needed to pass the new maps.
