President Donald Trump is championing himself as an expert in conflict resolution after helping successfully negotiate peace between Thailand and Cambodia. The president boasted about his accomplishment Monday while speaking to reporters in Scotland alongside U.
Thailand has accused Cambodia of violating a ceasefire agreement reached on Monday after days of deadly clashes along their disputed border, but negotiations between the two sides will continue.
President Trump took a victory lap Monday after Cambodia and Thailand reached a cease-fire deal to stop deadly fighting that erupted between the two Southeast Asian neighbors last week. On Saturday, the president had called up the leaders of the two countries and halted trade negotiations with them in a bid to stop the conflict.
The UN Security Council held an emergency closed-door meeting Friday in New York. Malaysia, which chairs the 10-nation regional bloc that includes both countries, called for an end to the hostilities and offered to mediate.
"The U.S. already flunked the test and that should be a wakeup call," a former senior U.S. State Department official told Newsweek.
