Nissan's plans for its third-generation electric vehicle (EV), the Leaf, have hit a roadblock due to the ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China. The automaker had intended to enhance the Leaf's interior space and upgrade its battery thermal management system.

China began restricting exports of rare earths in April in response to the global trade war started by President Trump. Currently, US automakers and manufacturers are allowed to apply for export licenses that are good for six months, no more.

Nissan is reportedly delaying the start of production of two electric models at its Canton, Mississippi, plant.
