Millions of low-income Americans, including families with children, could lose their food stamp benefits under House Republicans’ newly passed tax and spending cuts package, according to a Congressional Budget Office analysis released Thursday.
It would impose work requirements for low-income adults to receive Medicaid health insurance and increase them for food assistance as well as cut funding for services like birth control to the nation’s biggest abortion provider. Supporters of the bill say the moves will save money, root out waste and encourage personal responsibility.
Early Thursday morning, the House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act by one vote. The bill had been amended by the Rules Committee, and it now goes to the Senate for consideration.
