The California State Legislature has acknowledged that money alone may not be enough to entice production back to the state, introducing a pair of bills Wednesday aimed at bolstering Gov. Gavin Newsom’s plan to expand the state’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program.

To address the flight of productions to other states and countries, legislators are proposing bills that they say will make it more attractive to film in California.

California lawmakers plan to make the state’s film and TV incentive more lucrative for individual productions, while doubling the overall size of the program. At a press conference on Wednesday, lawmakers announced two companion bills — AB 1138 and SB 630 — to make the state’s program more competitive with other states.

Two proposals would reimburse homeowners in wildfire zones for making their roofs and yards more resistant to blazes.

The introduction of two bills follows plans to increase incentives to film and television to $750 million a year.
